Muslim holidays in 2024: calendar

Many families living in the territory profess Islam. The proposed Muslim calendar will help determine the dates in the Gregorian style, coinciding in 2024 with Muslim holidays in the Hijri.

Hijra and its peculiarities

The Gregorian calendar, which is familiar to most, counts from the Nativity of Christ, while the Islamic calendar (Hijra) counts years from the moment the Prophet Muhammad and the first Muslims from Mecca migrated to Medina. the event took place in June 622 (according to our usual calendar).

The Gregorian calendar is solar, as it is tied to the cycle of the Sun. There are 365 or 366 days in a year (for the classical and leap years, respectively).

The Muslim calendar is lunar, as it is based on the cycle of the moon. A full cycle is 354 or 355 days, but the timing of leap years varies from country to country. So, in the Arabic version, a 30-year cycle is adopted, in which 19 years are ordinary, and 11 are leap years, and in the Turkish version, an 8-year cycle is adopted, in which 5 years are of normal duration, and 3 are leap years.

Interesting facts:

  • Hijri also has 12 months;
  • new days are counted from the moment of darkness (with sunset);
  • a new month begins with the appearance of the young Moon in the sky;
  • in January 2024, the year 1445 will continue for Muslims;
  • The Muslim calendar for 2024 in the Gregorian style assumes the onset of 1446 Hijri on Sunday 07/07/24.

Important! Since the interpretation of the lunar cycles in different regions of the globe does not coincide (some peoples start from the astronomical facts of the new moon, and some from the actual visibility of the new moon in the sky), the dates of the main holidays may differ by several days.

Universal calendar

In order not to miss important Muslim holidays in the coming year 2024, we suggest using a universal calendar that contains both Gregorian dates and months according to the Muslim calendar.

Pay attention! Based on each of the 12 months of 2024 in the Gregorian style. There are two dates in each cell of the calendar. The Gregorian date is in the upper left corner and the Hijri date in the lower right corner. The transition from one Muslim month to another is highlighted visually in green and brown. The red corner in the cell is an important Muslim holiday.

Thus, each Muslim month will coincide with the following periods in the Gregorian calendar:

Month14451446
1Muharram19.07.23 - 16.08.2307.07.24 - 08.04.24
2Safar17.08.23 - 15.09.2305.08.24 - 03.09.24
3Rabbi al-awwal16.09.23 - 15.10.2304.09.24 - 03.10.24
4Rabbi as-sani16.10.23 - 14.11.2304.10.24 - 02.11.24
5Jumada al-awwal15.11.23 - 13.12.2303.11.24 - 02.12.24
6Jumada al-thani14.12.23 - 12.01.2403.12.24 - 31.12.24
7Rajab13.01.24 - 10.02.2401.01.25 - 01.30.25
8Shaaban11.02.24 - 10.03.2431.01.25 - 28.02.25
9Ramadan11.03.24 - 09.04.2401.03.25 - 29.03.25
10Shawwal10.04.24 - 08.05.2430.03.25 - 28.04.25
11Zu-l-Qaada09.05.24 - 06.06.2429.04.25 - 27.05.25
12Du-l-Hijja07.06.24 - 06.07.2428.05.25 - 25.06.25

As you can see, due to the discrepancy between the number of days in the lunar and solar calendars, there is an annual shift in the beginning of the new Muslim year relative to the chronology familiar to most. So, 1444 began on July 30, 2022, 1445 will begin on July 19, 2023, 1446 on July 7, 2024, and 1447 on June 26, 2025.

Muslim holidays

In addition to generally accepted federal dates, many regions of the country will also celebrate Muslim holidays in 2024. Some, along with the all-Russian ones, will give citizens an additional holiday weekend, and some every Muslim will simply celebrate in a narrow family circle, observing traditions.

The Muslim calendar sets the following important dates for 2024:
