After starting school, schoolchildren are most looking forward to the start of autumn holidays at school - we will tell you when children in different regions will have a rest in the first half of the 2023-2024 school year.
School year structure
Today, Russia uses two systems in the educational process:
- classic (quarter), in which the school year consists of 4 periods of unequal duration, separated by periods of rest;
- modular (trimester), in which the study schedule consists of 3 blocks, but each trimester is divided in half by a short vacation period.
If we compare two systems, we get the following comparison table:

First graders are given extra holidays in February.
Although there are significant differences between these two systems used in Russian schools, the periods of summer and New Year holidays, as well as the dates of the GIA, usually coincide, but the autumn and spring periods of rest have significant differences.
The basic requirements remain the same:
- in the period from September 1 to May 25, the student must rest for at least 30 days;
- all holidays start on Monday and last at least 7 days;
- on New Year's Eve, children rest the same way as the whole country, from the 1st to the 8th (in 2024, on the 7th, since the day off 08.01.24 will be moved to the May holidays).
Quarter System Schedule
The first quarter in all regions of the country starts on Friday, September 1, 2023. The training will last a full 8 weeks, as September and October are devoid of any public holidays and will not give students extra days off.
Important! In the classical system of 4 quarters, the autumn holidays of the 2023-2024 academic year will begin on Monday 10/30/23 and end on Sunday 11/05/23.
In 2023-2024, autumn will be lucky for those students whose schools work on a 5-day schedule, because the autumn holidays capture 11/04/23 (National Unity Day). Since this date falls on a weekend (Saturday), the following Monday (November 6) will also be a holiday. Thus, it turns out that with a five-day week, children will rest 8 days in a row, and the first day of the 2nd quarter will be Tuesday 07.11.23.
Those who study on a 6-day schedule will not be so lucky, for them the first school day of the 2nd quarter will be Monday 11/06/23, since they will actually have a holiday on Saturday, and in this case an additional day off no longer allowed.
The full vacation schedule for the quarter system for 2023-2024 will be as follows:
Trimester system schedule
The first trimester will traditionally begin on September 1st, but the accounting period will last until December 19th. This means that children will receive the final trimester grade only at the end of November, although the first autumn holidays of the 2023-2024 academic year are expected in October.
Important! In fact, schoolchildren will have a rest in the fall during trimesters twice. The first vacation will be held from 9 to 15 October 2023, the second - from 20 to 26 November 2023.
Thus, in the 2023-2024 school. year, the first autumn holidays will divide the trimester into two equal parts. The duration of each will be exactly 5 weeks. In this case, the second module will contain:
- 1 shortened day - Friday 03.11.23;
- extra day off - Monday 07.11.23.
After the second autumn vacation, the students will sit down at their desks on November 27, and until 2024 they will have exactly 5 weeks to study (the last week of November and the whole of December).

Possible changes
Important! The dates presented in the article are recommended, which means that the school can spend the autumn holidays of 2023-2024 on other days. Follow the information on the website of the educational institution, as the management must publish the structure of the academic year before September 1.
Please note that fixed dates for all schools are:
- starting school (September 1);
- winter holidays falling in January;
- end of school year (May 25).
All other periods of rest, whether autumn, spring or second winter, can be shifted if necessary, but no more than 14 days.
It is worth noting that after the country's schools began to actively introduce online methods of education, it became less common to postpone vacation periods. In case of urgent need, many schools simply transfer students to online learning without changing the previously approved work schedule.
According to current regulations, in the event of a shift in previously set dates, the administration is obliged to notify children and parents of the proposed changes at least 7 days in advance.
