One of the most important questions for schoolchildren of all ages is when the summer holidays of the 2024 school year will begin, which may affect the start and end dates of the long vacation period, as well as whether teachers have the right to give assignments for this period. Who sets the dates?

The Ministry of Education gives the optimal vacation dates for trimesters and quarters, but they are advisory in nature and the school or lyceum management has the right to draw up a different schedule.
At the same time, the whole of Russia begins the school year on September 1, gathering students for a solemn line dedicated to the “Day of Knowledge”. The exception is the years when the date falls on Sunday, then the holiday is celebrated on the 2nd.
The school year ends on May 25th. So, in 2024, the Last Call holiday will be held on Saturday, and from May 26, 2024, the long-awaited summer vacation will begin for most children.
SanPiN norms
Important! Despite the fact that schools are given a certain autonomy in the formation of the work schedule, they are required to adhere to the norms prescribed in the current version of SanPiN.
- the academic year can vary from 33 to 35 weeks;
- short periods of rest (autumn, winter and spring) cannot be less than 7 calendar days;
- interim holidays should start on Monday;
- in total, for 9 months of the school year, a student must rest for at least 30 days, regardless of which system education is organized in (trimester or quarter);
- 1 class under the quarter system gets extra February holidays;
- although the date of the start of the summer holidays in 2024 may be different for classes that do not pass final exams and pass the OGE / USE, the duration of the rest cannot be less than 8 weeks;
- the start of the rest period can be shifted, but no more than 2 weeks.

For quarters
The classical system assumes four periods, each of which is called a "quarter" , between which a week of rest is provided. In addition to the summer holidays, this school schedule includes 3 vacation periods.
For trimesters
The new schedule divides the year into three reference periods, called "trimester" . Moreover, each of the 3 trimesters is also divided into 2 modules. As a result, it turns out that in addition to the long vacation planned for the summer, students receive 5 week periods for rest during the school year (2 in autumn, 2 in winter and 1 in spring).
Important! Regardless of the training system, with such schedules, the first day of the summer holidays of 2024 is Sunday May 26.
Summer vacation in 9th grade
Those who are interested in when the summer holidays for graduates of the 9th grade will be at school should familiarize themselves with the schedule of the OGE 2024.
Officially, the main period of the GIA ends in early July, but in fact, students who passed the OGE on the first try can be free as soon as they pass all their tests (usually the main dates are distributed until mid-June, and then there are reserve days for retakes).

Is it legal to force children to attend extra classes during the summer holidays?
According to SanPiN, vacations in summer should be at least 8 weeks, and several lessons scheduled for June do not violate this norm. In this case, parents of students who do not have lags in mastering the program can challenge the teacher's requirement.
At the same time, there is a rule stating that all lessons included in the school work plan are mandatory. As a rule, this applies to classes for lagging students who received the final 2-ki. It is most likely impossible to avoid additional lessons here.
Is summer practice mandatory?
Again, it all depends on whether the practice is included in the school work plan. If this is the case and for this type of work, students should receive an assessment (or “pass”), then they will have to go to school. Otherwise, the issue can be resolved by contacting the administration of the educational institution.
Should the child do homework that was assigned for the holidays?
Homework for the summer holidays is what really stresses many students. Often these are quite voluminous works, the implementation of which takes a lot of time and can stretch for several weeks, overshadowing the summer vacation.
However, it's not officially forbidden to give children a task for the summer. Most often, these are creative works or assignments in specialized subjects that it is important for a child not to forget over the long 3 summer months.
