On the eve of the new school year, we suggest that you look in detail when educational institutions are recommended to spend school holidays in 2023-2024 and how the vacation periods will differ for schoolchildren who study in quarters and trimesters.
Vacation periods
Important! educational institutions have been given autonomy in determining the dates of vacation periods, so the holidays of 2023-2024 for schoolchildren can take place on different days, but in compliance with the generally accepted norms established in SanPiN.
Yes, school holidays 2023-2024 years must not violate the following requirements:
- in total, from September to June, the student must rest for at least 30 calendar days;
- minimum vacation period is 7 days (a week);
- rest period must start on Monday;
- in summer, children should rest for at least 2 months;
- winter holidays (January) cannot be shorter than the established non-working period (in 2024 this is the first week - from January 1 to January 7);
- transfer of dates set by the school schedule is allowed in force majeure circumstances, but not more than 2 weeks.
The structure of the school year is approved before the start of the educational process, so the exact dates on which schoolchildren should have holidays in 2023-2024 are already known at the end of August and should be available to all participants in the educational process.The management is instructed to publish this information on the official website of the school in a timely manner.
Important! The dates on which the holidays 2023-2024 fall for schoolchildren depend on which system is taught - quarterly or trimester.
Quarter system
In most schools in the Russian Federation today, the classical quartile education system has been adopted, which operated back in the days of the USSR and is well known to the parents of today's schoolchildren. Out-of-school organizations offering additional education (music, choreography, sports schools) also often work on a quarterly schedule.
Traditionally for this system, middle and high schools, as well as students in grades 2-4, rest 4 times (1 time in each season - autumn, winter, spring and summer), and first graders are provided with an additional winter period of rest attributable to February month.
In other words, the school holidays will divide the 2023-2024 academic year into 4 unequal parts - quarters:
- I quarter - from 01.09.23 to 29.10.23;
- II quarter - from 07.11.23 to 31.12.23;
- III quarter - from 01/09/24 to 03/24/24;
- IV quarter - from 04/01/24 to 05/25/24.
The structure of the academic year for the quarter system assumes that the holidays of the 2023-2024 school year. years will pass on the following dates:

Please note that the autumn holiday period will have its own characteristics. Although school holidays 2023 2024 will be held on approximately the same dates in quarters, schoolchildren will have different holidays:
- with a five-day period, the rest period will be 10 days (from Saturday 10/28/23 to Monday 11/06/23 inclusive), since the day off from Saturday is transferred to Monday;
- with six days - only 8 days (from Sunday 10/29/23 to Sunday 11/05/23), and Monday 11/06/23 will be the first school day of the 2nd quarter.
On the New Year holiday, the rest will be respectively 9 days for a five-day period and 8 days for a six-day period. February holidays do not affect such features, since elementary school does not study on Saturdays.
In March, to 7 days of vacation with a five-day week, 2 previous days off will be added (on the 23rd and 24th, respectively), and with a six-day week - only one day (Sunday).
Summer holidays in all schools, regardless of region, start after the Last Bell holiday, which traditionally takes place on May 25.
Trimester system
The trimester system is a relatively new way of organizing the educational process. According to teachers and psychologists, the modular schedule allows you to more correctly distribute the study load, alternating studies and short periods of rest in a ratio of 5:1.
The popularity of the trimester system is growing rapidly and every year more and more schools in Moscow and St. Petersburg (as well as the Moscow and Leningrad regions) are switching to a new work schedule that involves three accounting periods (trimesters):
- I trimester - from 09/01/23 to 11/19/23;
- II trimester - from 11/27/23 to 02/18/24;
- III trimester - from 26.02.24 to 25.05.24;
At the same time, the holidays of 2023-2024 years for schoolchildren who study in trimesters will take place on the following dates:

Thus, the first autumn holidays will divide the first trimester into two equal parts of 5 weeks each, and the second (in November) the guys will go, having already received the first final grades, which means they will be able to fully relax without remembering about study.
Winter (New Year's) holidays in the quarter and trimester systems traditionally coincide, capturing the weekend of the outgoing year, which falls on December, as well as the generally accepted period of "presidential holidays" .
In February, all schoolchildren whose schedule is composed of trimesters will receive a week of rest, while in the quarter these days only first graders will go on vacation.
Spring break will take place in April, dividing the third trimester into two parts (6+6 weeks), including several periods of "long weekend" on March 8 and May holidays.
Final certification 2024
The holidays of 2023-2024 will begin a little later for schoolchildren who study in quarters and trimesters if they have to take the GIA.
- The main period of the OGE 2024 starts on May 20 and will last until the first days of July.
- The main session of the USE 2024 will begin on May 27 and will also last until the beginning of July.
