Tatiana's Day: History, Traditions, Signs, Congratulations

At the end of January, students of the Russian Federation celebrate the holiday. In technical schools, colleges, universities, young people organize concerts, stage skits, organize quests and contests. Even the administration of educational institutions takes an active part in this. And all because Tatiana's day is not only the name day of girls with this beautiful name, but also a holiday of Russian students.

Why is Student's Day also called Tatyana's?

The history of Tatiana's day begins in the 3rd century AD. e. It was then that Tatiana lived in Rome, after being numbered among the early Christian martyrs. The girl was born into an eminent wealthy family, brought up in piety. After coming of age, she decided not to marry, for which she later became a deaconess. During the reign of Alexander Sever (222-235), Tatiana was captured and sent to the temple of Apollo.

The brave girl faithfully believed in Jesus Christ, so she refused to worship the idol, she only read prayers. According to The Life of the Saint, written by Dmitry Rostovsky in the 17th century, Tatiana was tried several times to initiate into the new faith. She refused, for which she was subjected to terrible torment. The wrath of God destroyed the statue of Apollo, part of the temple collapsed, and a large number of people died. The girl's body was restored, and 4 angels and a voice from heaven turned to her.

Despite everything, the Romans refused to believe in Jesus Christ. Having decided that Tatyana was a witch, they cut off her hair, continued to torture her, even sent her to the fire. But the result was the same - the girl completely recovered each time and abandoned her new faith. As a result, it was decided to behead Tatiana and her father. Martyrdom took place on 12 (25 new style) January 226.

The early Christian martyr is venerated by Orthodoxy and Catholicism.

But how did Tatiana's Day become a holiday for students? On January 12 (25), 1755, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna approved Ivan Shuvalov's petition to open Moscow University. This date was not chosen by chance. On this day, the statesman's mother had a name day, he wanted to please his loved one, therefore he submitted a petition for signing on Tatiana's day.

Initially, January 25 was celebrated only by students of Moscow University, and even then officially only since 1850. By the middle of the 19th century, the entire Russian intelligentsia joined the celebration. Since 2005, this date has been declared the Day of Russian Students at the legislative level.

What is the number of Students' Day and abroad?

In the Russian Federation, the holiday is celebrated every year on January 25. Despite the fact that Tatiana's Day is also celebrated by the Catholic Church, student's Day abroad has a completely different history and date. The events of 1939, when students from Czechoslovakia who came to the rally, were dispersed by the troops of the Third Reich, were taken as the basis. As a result, one of the protesters was killed. In 1946, in memory of the events that took place on November 17 in Prague, International Students' Day was proclaimed. Despite the sad history, today the celebration carries an extremely positive connotation.

In 2020, Student's Day will be celebrated on January 25 (Saturday), and around the world on November 17 (Tuesday).

Student and folk traditions of the holiday

Tatiana's Day has its own traditions, rituals, customs both in the Christian world and among students. Some features of the holiday for believers:

  1. Church services for the holy Martyr Tatiana of Rome.
  2. They light candles and pray to Tatyana for success in teaching and enlightenment. Moreover, not only students and not necessarily to this icon go for help on January 25.They turn to Saint Savva to cure ailments, to the icon of the Mother of God - for a successful delivery, full breastfeeding, they ask to grant health to babies.
  3. Loafs are baked in the shape of the sun according to old recipes, then each family member must eat at least a small piece.
  4. On the river, it is required to knock out all household rugs from dust.
  5. In the old days, voluminous, dense balls were wound from yarn so that the cabbage harvest was good.
  6. Unmarried girls made panicles from scraps and feathers. It was believed that if you secretly hide a product in the house of your beloved man, you will soon receive a marriage proposal.

Student's Day also has traditions:

  1. The most popular is to go out on the balcony at night or look out of the open window, shout: "Good luck (ball) come!". The ritual itself is recognized as powerful and effective, especially if from a casual passer-by you can hear: "On the way!" or "I'm on my way!" - the next session will pass without the slightest failure.

    If in response you hear something like: "You need to study!", Then there can be no talk of any freebies. We'll have to conscientiously prepare for exams and tests.

  2. Some on the last page of the classbook on January 25 at noon draw a house. The main condition is to schematically depict a house with a window, door, roof, chimney and smoke without lifting the pen from the paper. Moreover, the latter should be as long as possible.
  3. A booze on Student's Day is considered by many to be a necessary tradition of the holiday. Even the administration of universities treats young people on this day loyally and condescendingly.
  4. It is believed that January 25 is the best day for making wishes. At the same time, it is permissible to come up with a ritual on your own, the main thing is to sacredly believe in its effectiveness.
  5. Each university has its own traditions and customs. For example, at Moscow University they make mead for students, at the Belgorod Technical University they celebrate the holiday in the pre-revolutionary style, and in Volgograd they organize an exhibition of works of art created by Tatyana.

Divination for January 25

Tatyana's day is one of the most energetically charged. For this reason, it is customary among the people to find out the upcoming events on January 25th. Let's consider several options for predictions.

On the glasses

On Tatyana's day, young unmarried girls were reading fortune-telling with glasses. Each container was filled with water, to which some items or food was added. Then they were covered with a thick cloth, and the fortuneteller came up and intuitively chose any glass. Depending on what else turned out to be in it, a prediction was made:

  • salt is a jealous husband;
  • lemon - the spouse will be a bore;
  • earring - a generous person woo;
  • coffee - the groom will be a brunette, brown-haired, perhaps even a foreigner;
  • wine is a happy marriage;
  • ring - they will soon call you in marriage.

Fortune-telling glasses must be the same in shape and size.

On egg white

Pour hot water into a bowl. In a raw egg, make a small hole through which to strain the protein, pour into the liquid. When the gel-like mass curls up, use the resulting figure to determine the hint of fate:

  • animal - acquaintance;
  • home - wedding;
  • flower - a gif.webpt;
  • ship or plane - travel;
  • heart - love;
  • the male silhouette is a secret admirer.

According to the textbook

This is an analogue of the well-known fortune telling by the book, but it is on Students' Day that any textbook must be chosen. Sequencing:

  1. The fortuneteller retires.
  2. Tries to focus solely on a troubling issue.
  3. Closes his eyes, opens the book to the first page that comes across.
  4. Indicates a line with your finger.
  5. Opens his eyes, reads.

The answer can be a selected word or a whole sentence. Sometimes it is necessary to read the entire paragraph in order to understand the meaning of the prediction. It is important that the textbook allows you to guess by it, so it is better not to use algebra, as well as physics with chemistry. More appropriate books on humanitarian subjects - history, social studies, literature.

This fortune-telling is not only suitable for students. Even schoolchildren on January 25th can ask the book exciting questions.

What cannot be done on Tatyana's day?

In order for the study to be successful, you must follow some rules:

  1. You can't study, read, even just open notes.
  2. It is forbidden to quarrel, swear, feel negative towards the people around.
  3. Sadness, sorrow, bad mood is not the place on January 25th. On this day, you need to have fun, drink, walk with friends.
  4. The mess in the house will attract trouble, so it is recommended to clean the room well the day before. Well, except that the rugs should be left unbroken before the holiday in accordance with folk traditions.
  5. You cannot refuse to help those in need.

Student's Day is celebrated on January 25. The holiday is also called Tatiana's Day in memory of the Christian martyr. The event is celebrated throughout the country, each university has its own customs and traditions. Be sure to congratulate your loved ones on this wonderful day.
