Orthodox (Church) Calendar for 2022 - happy holidays

We bring to your attention the Orthodox (Church) calendar for 2022 with holidays, fasts and dates of commemoration of the departed.

Features of the Orthodox calendar

The church calendar is a combination of the month and Easter.

  • Months indicates each day of all months of the year as holidays and commemorations of saints that are not transient, that is, they have a constant calendar date.
  • Easter determines the date of the Easter Feast and the passing holidays depending on it - which do not have a fixed date in the calendar.

In liturgical practice, the Russian Orthodox Church uses the Julian calendar, in common parlance - the old style. For the convenience of using the church calendar, the dates of the old style are recalculated to the Gregorian calendar adopted since 1918 in civil life and in everyday life - a new style. The difference between the old and the new style in the 21st century is 13 days.

Important! The church year begins on September 1 according to the old style and the first holiday symbolizing the beginning of God's economy is the Nativity of the Mother of God. The last twelve feast - the Dormition of the Virgin - ends the year in a similar way.

Days of special commemoration of the departed

The days of special commemoration of the departed are called Parental Saturdays. In the Orthodox tradition, it is believed that on these special days the souls of the deceased get the opportunity to find relief or liberation from the afterlife punishment if the living pray for them. These days of remembrance are called “parental days,” because in this case, parents mean all ancestors, that is, in a broad sense, all people who lived before us.

The Orthodox calendar contains seven so-called parental Saturdays - days on which a special commemoration of dead Orthodox Christians is performed in Orthodox churches. Moreover, all days of commemoration, except for the day of commemoration of the deceased soldiers, have a non-fixed date, which changes from year to year.

  • 02/26/22 - Universal parental Saturday (Saturday before the week of the Last Judgment);
  • 03/19/22 - Universal parental Saturday of the 2nd week of Great Lent;
  • 03/26/22 - Universal parental Saturday of the 3rd week of Great Lent;
  • 04/02/22 - Universal parental Saturday of the 4th week of Great Lent;
  • 05/03/22 - Radonitsa (Tuesday of the 2nd week after Easter);
  • 06/11/22 - Trinity parental Saturday (Saturday before Trinity);
  • 05/09/22 - Commemoration of the deceased soldiers;
  • 05.11.22 - Dmitrievskaya parental Saturday (Saturday before November 8).

A special place in the number of parental Saturdays is occupied by the Ecumenical parental Saturdays. There are only two of them - Myasopustnaya and Troitskaya. During Ecumenical Parental Saturdays, the Orthodox Church holds special services - among other things, ecumenical dirges - and commemorates in its prayers all Christians who have ever lived. The rest of the parental Saturdays are not universal and do not pretend to such worldwide coverage, but they are intended for private (family) commemoration.
