We analyze the main astronomical events of the year - when will solar and lunar eclipses take place in 2024, where it will be possible to observe the overlap of the lunar and solar disks, and also what impact these events can have on people's lives.
Astronomical events of 2024
Traditionally, there are 2 to 4 eclipses of the Moon and the Sun per year, and the coming year will be no exception. In 2024, the following eclipses are expected (solar and lunar):
Date | Eclipse | Type |
25.03.24 | lunar | partial |
08.04.24 | sunny | full |
18.09.24 | lunar | partial |
02.10.24 | sunny | ring-shaped |
Saros cycles
The draconian period called "saros" is a time cycle spanning approximately 18.03 tropical years. In each such cycle, lunar and solar eclipses occur in approximately the same order. The duration of the saros cycle can vary from 1,226 to 1,550 years and include from 69 to 87 eclipses (most often 71-72), of which:
- 39-59 - central, fall in the middle of the cycle and can be full, hybrid or ring;
- the rest are private, occurring at the beginning and end of the cycle.
It is worth noting that the saros does not have an exact integer, and the path of the lazy shadow cast on Earth during a solar eclipse shifts south or north each time, so there are eclipses with a descending and ascending node of the Moon.
Up to 40 saros cycles are active at each moment of the eclipse. At the same time, the solar and lunar cycles have their own independent numbering.
Solar eclipses
A solar eclipse is observed when the Moon is located between the Earth and the Sun and completely or partially covers the disk.
Depending on the location of celestial bodies, they distinguish:
- full;
- private;
- ring-shaped;
- hybrid (the rarest).
The current 21st century will include 224 solar eclipses, including:
- full - 68;
- private - 77;
- ring-shaped - 72;
- hybrid - 7.
It is worth noting that not all of these events can be observed from the territory. The official eclipse calendar compiled by scientists contains information about when the expected event will occur, how long the period of overlap of the solar disk will last, and from where on Earth it can be seen.
April 2024 (Full)
The first solar eclipse of 2024, expected in April, will have the following parameters:
Date | April 8, 2024 (Monday) |
Saros | 139 |
Type | full |
Value | 1,057 |
Duration | 4 minutes 28 seconds |
Max phase (time) | 18:18:29 |
The total eclipse will be visible in Eastern Canada, the central regions of the United States, as well as in Mexico. For Central and North America, the disk overlap will be only partial, so residents of these regions will see the eclipse as a partial eclipse.
October 2024 (Annular)
The second solar eclipse of 2024 will occur in mid-autumn. For him, the calendar of astronomical events sets the following basic parameters:
Date | 2 October 2024 (Wednesday) |
Saros | 144 |
Type | ring-shaped |
Value | 0.933 |
Duration | 7 minutes 25 seconds |
Max phase (time) | 18:46:13 |
It will be possible to see in full beauty the effect that annular solar eclipses create in 2024 from the territory of Argentina and southern Chile. How a partial eclipse will be observed in the southern regions of South America and the adjacent waters of the Pacific Ocean.
Interesting fact! Not a single solar eclipse of 2024 will be visible. The nearest event that can be observed in the north of the Russian Federation is a partial solar eclipse on 03/29/25.

Lunar eclipses
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is positioned between the Moon and the Sun in such a way that the lunar disk is in shadow. At the same time, a necessary condition for this astronomical event is the full moon, as well as the proximity of the Moon to the node of its orbit.
Depending on the location of celestial bodies, they distinguish:
- full;
- private;
- partial.
230 lunar eclipses are expected in the 21st century, including:
- full - 85;
- private - 58;
- partial - 87.
There may be 2 to 4 lunar eclipses in a year, but only two are expected in 2024.
March 2024 (Partial)
For the March lunar eclipse, the calendar of astronomical events in 2024 sets the following basic parameters:
Date | March 25, 2024 (Monday) |
Saros | 113 |
Type | partial |
Knot | D |
Max phase (time) | 7:13 |
The event will be visible from western Africa and Europe, south and east of North America.
September 2024 (private)
The September lunar eclipse of 2024 will have the following parameters:
Date | September 18, 2024 (Wednesday) |
Saros | 118 |
Type | private |
Knot | A |
Max phase (time) | 2:44 |
It will be possible to observe the eclipse from the territory of the USA, as well as Australia and East Asia, in the west of Europe and Africa.

2024 Midpoints
In astrology, important dates are not only eclipses, but also days equidistant from them. It is believed that the so-called "middle points" are extremely unfavorable for any important undertakings, these days you should avoid making important decisions.
Autological calculations indicate that in 2024 the midpoints between eclipses will fall on the following dates:
- January: 4, 11, 18;
- April: 1;
- June: 21, 29;
- July: 6;
- September: 25;
- December: 15, 23, 30.
Important! The unfavorable period covers both the date itself and 3 days before and after it.
