Since 2008, July 8 in our country, the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity has officially received the status of a public holiday. The Russian Orthodox Church canonized Prince Peter and his wife (Princess Fevronia) as saints. This holiday personifies loyalty and devotion, as well as spiritual intimacy, not physical. Saints are revered by the church and are considered the patrons of ideal family relationships.

Even from school, a sad but very beautiful story of love and fidelity was told. In the 16th century, the events that took place with a married couple were described by Ermolai-Erasmus (Ermolai the Sinister) in his book "The Tale of Peter and Fevronia".
Once the prince of Murom, Yuri Vladimirovich, had a serious illness with his youngest son. Ulcers appeared on his body. None of the then doctors could help the prince recover from this scourge. All the doctors said that Peter was doomed, and nothing could help him. The man resigned himself to his fate. But one day he had a prophetic dream in which he saw that a girl named Fevronia could provide help in his trouble.
She was born in a Ryazan village and came from a peasant family whose father was a beekeeper. From an early age, the girl studied the properties of healing herbs and could heal. Fevronia was a beautiful and intelligent person. Therefore, as soon as Peter saw her, he immediately fell in love with her. He promised to marry the healer when she got him back on his feet. But he did not fulfill his promise. After the beauty cured him, and the prince recovered, he immediately forgot about this word. They say that this was the reason for even greater troubles that fell on the head of the prince. Leprosy again appeared on the body of Pyotr Yuryevich.
He again sent messengers to Fevronia. She did not drive them away, but went to Murom to heal Peter. Soon the man recovered and married a young beauty. He never regretted that he married a commoner.
The married couple still had a lot of troubles and difficulties, but they all overcame. They lived together for many years, died on the same day and bequeathed to be buried in one coffin. But the boyars and other people decided that this did not correspond to church traditions, and therefore they buried them, albeit nearby, but in different coffins. Legend has it that the next day the people saw that they were both in the same coffin. After that, they decided that it was not worth separating the couple and breaking their vows.
Traditions of this day
According to the folk calendar, July 8 (according to the old calendar - June 25), this day is celebrated as the day of the first mowing. The day when all the undead played pranks. After a night on Ivan Kupala, it was already possible to swim safely. It was said that at this time the mermaids plunge into the depths of the reservoir and sleep until spring.
Chamomile is considered the symbol of the celebration. This flower is very popular among lovers. Each girl used a chamomile for fortune telling: "Loves - does not love." According to legend, July 8 is the time for happy marriages.

It is best to meet this day in the village, spend it with your family or arrange a trip to nature. Surprise your significant other:
