What might you need?

It is not necessary to have scrapbooking supplies to make a postcard with your own hands. Even a minimal set of tools will allow you to create a pretty little thing. We have collected a far from complete list of what may come in handy, but even if you only have scissors and a ruler, this will be enough.

Instruments:

  • scissors,
  • curly scissors;
  • glue stick,
  • breadboard knife and rug,
  • ruler,
  • curly staplers and hole punches,
  • Double-sided tape,
  • glue gun,
  • compass,
  • stamps,
  • colored gel pens, pencils, paints, markers.

A postcard can be decorated with completely different materials, but one cannot do without paper. This can be scrapbooking paper, colored cardboard, or a pattern printed on a color printer.

Secretly: the author of this article collects beautiful cardboard boxes (from cosmetics and other things), various ribbons, ribbons and interesting things throughout the year, so that they can then be used for creativity with a child. Her husband calls her a hoarder, but she believes that this is not so :)

Here are the materials you can use:

  • colored paper or colored cardboard, scrapbooking paper, wrapping paper, etc.
  • crepe paper, translucent tracing paper;
  • buttons, beads, sequins;
  • ribbons, strings, braid, lace;
  • felt, multi-colored pieces of fabric;
  • plastic eyes for characters;
  • ordinary unpainted cardboard;
  • sisal, threads, twine;
  • foil or silver tape;
  • colored adhesive tape;
  • old purchased postcards;
  • glitters and bestows;
  • baking sleeve (for transparent windows in postcards).

In general, all sorts of different materials :)

Compositional principles and color combinations

To make a postcard that "keeps the eye", when creating it, use the following principles:

  • select the center of the composition: the place where the main decorative element will be located;
  • do not scatter elements over the entire area of the postcard, do not try to fill the entire space;
  • try to come up with a general idea and combine it by theme, color and style in one card.

As for the combination of colors, it is better to use colors of the same temperature and saturation.

Color saturation is how close it is to white.

For example, imagine a new red T-shirt. Now imagine this same T-shirt after 50 washes. In the latter case, its color will be less saturated.

If you have chosen gentle pastel colors for a New Year's card, then the number of bright details should be minimal (one or two, or even you can do without them altogether). If you have chosen bright, contrasting colors, then feel free to use them as the main colors of the product.

Color temperature is a conditional division of color into cold and warm. The same red can be cold or warm.Use either cold or warm shades in one composition.

And below in the photo is a selection of traditional New Year's palettes.

Use the color wheel to better navigate the color combination. The diagram below (right) shows the most successful combinations. As you can see, red and green are on the opposite side of the color wheel. That is why they combine so well with each other.

Step-by-step manufacturing algorithm

So, the materials are selected, the tools are ready: you can start!

  1. Determine the size of the base (the A5 format is best suited - an A4 sheet folded in half, but you can make a base of any format).
  2. We think over an idea, a palette.
  3. Thinking over the arrangement of elements and decor.
  4. Prepare the elements (cut out, paint).
  5. We attach them to the base.
  6. We decorate.

Ideas for New Year cards from different materials

Buttons are an affordable material that makes it easy to create an image of a Christmas tree, Christmas ball or Christmas wreath.

Christmas trees made of paper. It is very simple to make such a postcard for the New Year: cut out a triangle, paste it on and you're done! If there is no colored paper, it's okay: make a base or a Christmas tree out of unpainted packaging cardboard, decorate it with beads - you get a vintage card.

The original idea: to make a window in the shape of a herringbone, then the bottom layer of paper will be visible through it.

Volumetric decor is easy to make by gluing paper tubes or “several layers of a Christmas tree” to the base with a ladder. Stars, beads, sequins, and ribbons are great decorations for a paper tree.

If you want the decor to be at a distance from the base, attach it to double-sided construction tape (or special scrapbooking pads). The tape is 2-3 mm thick. This is enough to create a similar effect.

Use of textile materials. Felt, knitted decor, pompons, satin ribbons and lace - this is an incomplete list of textiles for creating New Year's cards.

Snowflakes, Christmas balls, gif.webpts, sweets, candles and animals are cute little inhabitants of the paper space. Choose what you like best! For 2022, the Tiger can be drawn or glue the face of the symbol of the year - a cute Tiger Cub!

Create a base of an unusual shape: in the form of a cup of coffee, a New Year's house or a gingerbread man - this is really unusual and interesting! A child will not hesitate to bring such a postcard to an exhibition in a school or kindergarten.

Templates and sketches

In order not to puzzle over the composition of a New Year's card, there are many templates (so-called sketches) that show a schematic arrangement of elements. The photo below shows a postcard made according to this template and several sketches.

New Year's lettering

Another trick that you can use: print beautiful inscriptions on black and white or colored paper and use them as a decorative element. Here are some lettering options (all labels are on a transparent background).
