Mother's Day in Russia in 2022 is celebrated on Sunday, November 27, 2022… The holiday is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of November. This date is movable. Mother's Day in Russia was established by decree of the President of the Russian Federation of January 30, 1998 No. 120 "On Mother's Day" in order to increase the social significance of motherhood.
The emergence of a holiday
Mother's Day is celebrated all over the world, in more than 50 countries, despite the fact that all countries do not celebrate it on the same day. While Mother's Day celebrations around the world are influenced by different traditions, they all have a common origin.
It is possible that the tradition of celebrating Mother's Day dates back to the days of the ancient Greeks, who held celebrations in honor of Rhea, the mother of the gods.
Early Christians celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Great Lent the Feast of the Mother in honor of Mary, the Mother of Christ.
But the holiday, which has become popular in relatively recent times, today we can still find three sources.
True Mother's Day was first introduced in the United States by Julia Ward Howe, writer of the Republic Battle Anthem. She offered to devote this day to the world. Since 1872, she has organized Mother's Day gatherings in Boston every year.
However, some argue that Mother's Day was almost accidentally initiated by Juliet Calhoun Blakely. On Sunday, May 11, 1877, Mrs. Blakely's birthday, her son, who was the pastor of her Church, abruptly left the pulpit. Mrs. Blakely then went to the pulpit and took over the rest of the service, encouraging other mothers to join her.
Mrs. Blakely's sons were so moved by their mother's actions that they vowed to return to their hometown of Albion, Michigan every year to celebrate their mother's birthday. In addition, the brothers encouraged others to honor their mothers on the second Sunday in May.
From the point of view of acquiring its national status for the holiday in the United States, and later around the world, undoubtedly, the main driver was a teacher in Philadelphia named Anna M. Jarvis.
In 1907, Anna began a movement to create a national Mother's Day in honor of her mother. Anna's mother, Anna M. Jarvis, was instrumental in the development of Mothers' Friendship Day, which was created to assist in the rehabilitation process after the civil war. Miss Jarvis wanted to set aside a day to honor the memory of all mothers, living and dead.
Mother's Day Traditions
Each country has its own Mother's Day traditions.
In the USA and Australia, for example, carnation flowers are hung on clothes as a sign of love for mom. Depending on the color of the carnation, you can determine whether a person remembers his mother, who finished her earthly journey, or thanks my mother, who, fortunately, is alive. White carnations are worn in memory of the departed mother.
For several years now, Russia has hosted an All-Russian social action dedicated to Mother's Day, “Mom, I love you!”. Volunteers hand out postcards to give to mom. And on clothes, in turn, you can attach a forget-me-not flower. As a sign that we must never forget our mother.
