What is Palm Sunday?

Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem or Palm Sunday- a Christian holiday celebrated on the Sunday ("week") preceding Easter, that is, on the sixth Sunday of Great Lent, exactly one week before Easter. Dedicated to the solemn entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, described in all four Gospels. In Orthodoxy, it is one of the twelve holidays. However, in the Orthodox calendar, the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem formally does not have a forefeast, unlike other twelve feasts, although Lazarev's Saturday on the eve can be considered as a forefeast, and does not have an afterfeast at all, since it is immediately followed by Passion Week.

The scripture says that Jesus rode on a donkey to Jerusalem, where the people met him, putting clothes and palm branches on the road with exclamations: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! " (Matthew 21: 9).

This holiday has several names - Vai Week, Palm Sunday, Palm Sunday (Greek Κυριακή των Βαΐων, Church Slavonic Week Vaiyi, Latin Dominica in Palmis de passione Domini). In liturgical books, it is also sometimes called the Flower Week, and in common parlance - Palm Sunday. Also, this day is sometimes called Verbnitsa, Kvitny, Tsvitny, Shutkov and Bechkov Sunday. This is due to the fact that palm branches in countries with cold climates were replaced by willows (cf. Bulgarian Vrabnitsa, Belorussian Verbnitsa, Ukrainian Verbna nedilya, lit. Verbų sekmadienis). The first mention of the use of willow in divine services is found in the Izbornik Svyatoslav.

On the eve of the feast of the Lord's Entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), Saturday evening, believers bring flowers and willow twigs to the church to consecrate them. They believe that the consecrated willow has great protective power.

Celebration traditions and signs

Palm Sunday does not imply a lavish feast - the holiday always falls on Lent. On Palm Sunday, according to the statute, fish is allowed.

The main tradition of the holiday is the consecration of willow twigs. Earlier, before bringing willows to church, they were decorated with colored threads, feathers, flowers made of paper or fabric. Consecrated branches are placed next to the icons and kept until next year.

In the old days there was a custom to lightly hit each other with a willow. On the night from Saturday to Sunday, young people went around the houses with songs and, entering the hut, lightly beat the sleeping branches with willow branches. This tradition in different forms is widespread among many Slavic peoples, for example, among Belarusians, Poles and Czechs. The "beating" is usually done in the morning, after the consecration of the willow, near a church or at home. Also, cattle were driven out with willow twigs.

Like many other holidays, the weather on Palm Sunday was used to judge the coming summer: if before Palm Sunday a lot of pussy willow earrings appeared (buds blossomed), then the whole year will be fruitful and rich in good events. Any work that day was considered undesirable.

The willow branches were kept all year round - until the next Palm Sunday. At the same time, the consecrated willow could not be thrown away. On the eve of the new holiday, the willow was burned or thrown into the stream.

The holiday is associated with an interesting rite of passage "Procession on a donkey", which was performed in the Russian Church on Palm Sunday in the 16th-17th centuries. In memory of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the patriarch sat on a donkey and, accompanied by the king, nobles and the people, entered the Spassky Gate of the Moscow Kremlin.
